Downtown Knoxville in Fall Colors
Downtown Knoxville in Fall Colors

In keeping with the sunrise images of the last few weeks, I wanted to share this image from the spring, which totally caught me off guard.  My buddy Steve and I decided to meet up at Foothills Parkway in the Great Smoky Mountains one morning to shoot the sunrise.  The forecast was honestly not that stellar, but we decided to go anyway, just because.  We both got out and setup our cameras – mostly out of some feeling of duty – and then proceeded to just chat.  The sunrise looked like it would be a total bust because the clouds were so blocked up at the horizon, and zero fog meant the scene just wasn’t all that interesting.  We stayed well past sunrise, and out of nowhere, beams of light erupted from the clouds.  First one little spotlight, then the scene you see above.  We were both about to bail, counting it a loss photographically, but then this all happened.  The light moved through the clouds for quite some time until I really had to leave – I sure am glad we hung around as long as we did though!

More next week!
