Last week I mentioned that Prague was classically European, and I think this week’s Picture of the Week illustrates why. Terracotta roofs, narrow cobblestone streets, and an old world style; I think that sums the city up nicely… not to mention the cathedrals everywhere. It’s just a cool city.
Speaking of cathedrals, Holly and I had been bumming around town one afternoon shopping for postcards and magnets (Holly has a thing for buying a magnet from every place we visit… our refrigerator wears them like badges of honor) when I stumbled on a postcard with an image of a church ceiling that had some amazing fresco paintings on it. I flipped it over and the postcard said it was taken inside the Church of Saint Nicholas (you can see a similar picture that I took here). After asking around, we got directions we were confident with and took off to see what we could see. As we walked towards the cathedral I could see a door with signs directing people in, so Holly and I entered there. Turns out that was the entrance to the bell tower and not the main sanctuary, but what the heck… we were there. We climbed the dizzying (literally) spiral staircase to the top and were welcomed with the an amazing view of the old part of town, which is where this week’s picture was taken from. Quite the accidental find!
We later found our way around to the front of the church where the main entrance is (and yet another entrance fee) and got to checkout the beautiful sculptures and paintings awaiting inside… but I think we both could have stayed up in the tower all afternoon! 🙂
