Perhaps just as surprising as old cars out in the middle of the desert, is a 50’s era oven riddled with bullet holes. Well, maybe the bullet holes are not all that unexpected given the location, but the oven itself is not something I would anticipate coming across while on a stroll out in the desert.
I mentioned last week that it’s a bit of a mystery why all this stuff is out there. The cars and trucks are all missing their drivetrains, and the popular theory is that those drivetrains were used for the nearby mining operations. There is also a huge pile of parts, which I would guess were kept for repairing things that might break along the way. The oven seems to be at a homesite. The metal frame you can see in the background was sheltering a wellhead and just beside the camera position looked to be an old livestock pen of some sort. There’s no house left, but you can still make out what looks like a turn around for the driveway – or what I’m guessing was the driveway (it leads through a gate before extending back to the road).
Below in the Alternative Perspective section is small collection of daytime images to help further show what the area looks like. Definitely a bit dystopian!
Move next week!
