I’ve probably mentioned this before, but if there has been one thing that has inspired more of my travels than anything else, it was the Time-Life book series, Mysteries of the Unknown, and specifically the Mystic Places volume. As a kid I was really into aliens and the paranormal, and I thought those books were just the coolest thing. From that, a number of places ended up on my bucket list, even to this day, with Stonehenge being one of them (others have been Easter Island, the Nazca lines, Machu Picchu and I’m sure others I’m not thinking of immediately). Anyway, I say all that to say that I’ve wanted to see Stonehenge for a really long time, and was delighted to finally make it happen, on my birthday of all days!
This trip to England was our first, and so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a transportation perspective. To save on time and stress, Holly and I decided to just book a tour, and I thankfully found the one tour that allows you to go into the center of the circle of stones; icing on the cake! In addition to Stonehenge, the tour also went by Bath, which was an absolutely gorgeous town, as well as a small village called Lacock, which is equally as beautiful, and the film location for a few episodes of Downton Abbey. It was quite the fun day!
This week’s Picture of the Week is obviously the famous Stonehenge. The tour we had was a sunset tour, which meant the park was closed, except for us and a few onlookers from beyond the park boundary. That gave us the rare opportunity to photograph the formation without any people in the scene, which was an added bonus for me. 🙂 The scene, however, was not free from crows, which you’ll see in the Alternative Perspectives section. Also there you’ll find a couple of scenes from Lacock and Bath.
More next week!
