And just like that, we’re already at the last weekend of January! Isn’t that crazy? It feels like Christmas was just yesterday, and here we are, solidly into the first quarter of the year!
Anyway, I wanted to wrap up the month here with some more views of Savannah – this time in what I call “Alt Light”. The images that you see here are all in infrared. Generally speaking, infrared images typically get flipped to black and white after taking them, and that’s what people see, OR people do some channel swapping for some strange looking false color. This, though, is closer to what I see on the back of the camera when I’m out taking pictures in infrared. The end result is a more sepia looking image, but with some added greens that wouldn’t come through in black and white or sepia. As I’ve played with this, I’ve appreciated the extra tones the green provides over just the two tones of black and white. It does result in a sort of “old timey” feel though, doesn’t it?
Beyond the format choice, each of these images illustrates the power of a really wide angle lens. In almost every image, you can see the ground, and nearly straight up (the very last image you can see lights that are on a wall, and then a little more than straight up). I chose this view in most of the images because I wanted to highlight the beautiful live oak trees and Spanish moss that form the canopy overhead. The one exception is the image below where I’ve just zoomed in on the Spanish moss itself. I love the feeling the moss gives these scenes, and I thought it’d be interesting to find a composition that just focuses on it entirely.
So there you have it – I hope you enjoy!
Next week we’ll transition to a new (to me) country! See you then,
–Dan Thompson
