If you happened to catch my 5 favorite photos from 2023 post (and I hope you did!), this week’s Picture of the Week had a bit of a spoiler in there! 🙂 The image above was one of my favorites of the year. I noted in that post that I captured this image at the Fort Pulaski National Monument on Tybee Island. I call this one Cannon Tracks because the lanes on the floor were actually a track that a wheel sat in at the rear of the fort’s cannons, which allowed them to swivel some back and forth. I loved the ingenuity of it all, but I also loved how the arches on the floor mimicked the arched ceilings as well. The shapes and tones of this one really bring the whole thing together for me personally.
What I didn’t talk about in that post though, were all the mosquitoes we had to battle while out there! It was miserable! Inside the fort was okay, but we made the mistake of stepping on the grass outside the fort, and were immediately swarmed. After visiting the inside, I wanted to go out to an observation point where you can see the lighthouse pictured below – my favorite little lighthouse. Well, we got about 10 yards in and Holly called it quits because the mosquitoes were so bad! By the time I got back I was literally covered in them, and surrounded by a fog. Holly jumped out of the car and helped me swat / kill the ones we could before retreating to the car and continuing to swat / smack at them. Haha I think my blood pressure went up again just in typing that! Unfortunately, the pictures I got out there weren’t all that great, BUT, I had to share at least one since I went to all that trouble!
Below you’ll find the image of the Cockspur Lighthouse, and also another view from inside the fort, just past the ‘cannon tracks”. The halls of the fort were a blast to shoot, even with all the bugs, though admittedly it would have been even better without them!
More next week!
