The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry – Robert Burns

If you’ve been following along the last few weeks, you’ll have read how my trip out west – in the desert – was marked by rain storms, of all things.  Definitely not what I had in mind.  In fact, generally speaking, this year has seemingly had very few quality nights to photograph the night sky, and I haven’t gotten to accomplish nearly what I set out to this year.  HOWEVER, I have gotten to the chance to capture the night sky on several occasions, and for that, I’m extremely grateful, which brings us to this week’s Picture of the Week.

One of my current favorite things to do is go wander around in the desert, off trail, looking for interesting rock formations to photograph.  My friend Mark Robben introduced me to this last spring when he and I did our first meet up out in Joshua Tree, and I have been anxiously awaiting my chance to go back ever since.  

One evening while we were out looking for a giant rock that resembles a bird skull (next week), I happened to catch a glimpse of the rock formation featured above.  When I saw it, I immediately thought it looked like part of a lizard (or some kind of reptile) skull.  I guess rocks that look like skulls were a theme of the week. After setting up the shot for next week, I ran over and set this scene up as well, and I’m still on the fence as to which I like better.  Next week you can decide for yourself!  🙂
