I didn’t know fog was an option!
When Holly and I booked our trip to Italy, I honestly didn’t know what to think about Venice. I’d heard mixed reviews of the city, but we frankly just felt like we wanted to see it for ourselves. Upon exiting the train station at the edge of town, you’re immediately faced with the uniqueness of the city – one of the main canals is right there – tempered by the usual “where the heck are we supposed to go”, while sorting through the crowd of people. We generally try to keep day one of any new city pretty loose and essentially just see what we see, but I had made up my mind that I’d go exploring the next morning around sunrise.
Much to my surprise, and joy, when I woke up the next morning and looked outside, a dense fog sat on the city. It was absolutely magical. It lasted several hours after daylight, when the sun finally burned it away, and made for some fun photography in the process. As it was early, many of the boats that typically clog the canals were still docked by the sidewalk so I went off looking for ways to incorporate them into my scenes. This week’s Picture of the Week is one such scenes, and one of my favorite images from Venice. I loved how the pedestrian bridge almost fades completely into the fog, adding some interest above the parked taxi boat, which I was able to single out from the boats around it.
Below in the Alternative Perspective section, you’ll find a collection of other images I shot while in Venice. A couple of the images, as you’ll see, were from this same morning, while others were scenes I found after the fog had left. Venice is definitely a picturesque city, and one it seemed you could spend a lifetime exploring all the back alleys and canals.
More next week!
