When visiting Honolulu, and specifically the Waikiki area, Diamond Head is a prominent landmark. The volcanic cone, known locally as Lēʻahi, is perhaps as synonymous with Oahu as Pearl Harbor is, though if you’ve never been to Hawaii, you may not have known its name. While Holly and I were staying in the Waikiki area, the ridgeline served as a backdrop for numerous photos. In fact, if you look back at the first post of this series, you’ll see it in the background of two different images. Holly and I also hiked to the top of it, a quintessential tourist activity that offers amazing views of the area, and was just a really fun – if not really crowded – place to visit.
It wasn’t until we were flying out, however, that I really felt like I’d captured the mountain. On our flight to the Big Island from Oahu, the plane took a really nice route around the southern part of the island, which gave us this amazing view. From the plane window you could really get a sense of the scale of the cone, as well as the surrounding city. Just stunning!
