If you're a fan of Man vs Food, you may have heard of this one. It's called Plain and Fancy and it's located on an Amish homestead turned tourist attraction in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. If you're visiting Amish country and want some good ole comfort food, look no further! You'll want to bring your appetite and spend some time enjoying the farm to table food… all of it.
When you walk into the restaurant area of Plain and Fancy (there's a country store there with lots of goods from the area, and even a hotel if you'd like to stay for the night in the area), you're faced with a choice; do you want to eat family style with a group of people you don't know, or do you want to just sit down by yourselves and eat something from the menu? We originally were going to do option 1, however it was going to be a while before we were seated (admittedly it was a bad time to be having lunch, it was 2PM)… they apparently wait until there are several families there before they start serving. Option 2, sitting at your own table, works out actually… if there are two of you, you can work the menu such that you'll get everything you would have gotten had you done the family style meal, minus the try-it-all dessert tray. Let's be honest though, you'll be so stuffed by the time you're done, it's hard to do dessert anyway… but we did it.
Everything we had was amazing, but the fried chicken and roast beef were over the top. The chow chow (pickled vegatables) and slaw were also excellent. For dessert we tried the Apple Crumb Pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and even though we were uncomfortably stuffed, it was to die for. Seriously, just go there and order everything on the menu. You won't be disappointed.
