Under the main railway station in Szczecin, Poland is one of the largest underground bunkers in all of Europe… and it is as interesting as it is strange.
This is another one of those attractions that catches you off guard. I really didn’t have an previous knowledge of what I was getting myself in to when we signed up for this tour, but it was definitely worth the time. As I mentioned, the bunker itself is underneath the main train station in Szczecin, Poland and sprawls FOREVER. Inside are tons of rooms, many just the way they were left after the cold war.
These bunkers were setup during World War II as bomb shelters. Szczecin was literally bombed by all sides of the war as the city changed hands multiple times. These bunkers were where the locals came to hide from all those bombs. The site itself is now basically a museum with lots of artifacts and information stops that show you all kinds of things from the war and beyond. Our tour guide had a tape recorder which played in English so we could learn about the various stops on the tour and then added information verbally beyond that (and we were fortunate to have our Polish friends with us who could interpret). This place was DEFINITELY worth coming to. I was completely fascinated.
