I’ve mentioned before that I don’t go particularly crazy over lighthouses, but while in Daytona I found myself a bit short on subjects… so I thought I’d give this one a go. As I’ve also mentioned previously, when I visit a new place (or a place I haven’t been to since I was a kid), I’ll usually do a Google image search to see what the shot is, and then work out from there. Additionally, I’ll look around on Google Maps to see if maybe there are other vantage points of a particular subject that I can get access to… hopefully without getting arrested (those darn trespassing laws can kill creativity)! In this particular case, what I found was that a large majority of the pictures of Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse are taken right up next to the lighthouse. If you visit the grounds, it’s frankly the obvious shot. After looking around on Google Maps though, I found that just past the lighthouse itself, is Lighthouse Point Park, which has a small peninsula that wraps around giving you the view above. Add in the fact that I’m a sucker for sailboats, and voila! I found my spot. 🙂
The lighthouse itself is really tall, and so the distance away makes it a little easier to capture, in my opinion. Furthermore, the Lighthouse Point Park is pretty in its own right, with a few trails leading around in different directions near, and in some cases right next to, the water… which is a definite plus in my book. It’s certainly worth checking out if you find yourself in Daytona, and if you needed another reason to go, the small road leading to the lighthouse and park is surrounded by beautiful beach homes!
